Gynaecomastia

Feeling Self-Conscious About Your Chest?

Gynaecomastia is a common condition where male breast tissue becomes enlarged. It often develops during puberty, but for some men it doesn’t go away.

If you avoid fitted shirts, feel uncomfortable at the beach or gym, or find yourself constantly thinking about your chest, you’re not alone. Many men quietly struggle with this – and effective treatment is available.

What Causes It?

Chest fullness in men may be due to:

  • Excess glandular breast tissue
  • Fatty tissue
  • Or a combination of both

Even with exercise and weight loss, glandular tissue will not disappear on its own.

A careful assessment determines what is contributing in your case.

How Surgery Can Help

Male chest reduction surgery aims to create a flatter chest contour. Depending on your anatomy, this may involve:

  • Liposuction to remove excess fat
  • Direct removal of glandular tissue through a small incision around the areola
  • Or a combination of both

Incisions are placed as discreetly as possible.

Is Surgery Right for You?

Surgery may be appropriate if:

  • Your chest has been stable for at least 12 months
  • Exercise hasn’t improved the fullness
  • You feel self-conscious or uncomfortable because of it

A consultation provides the opportunity to assess your chest, discuss your goals, and explain the risks, recovery and expected outcomes clearly and honestly.

What to Expect

  • Performed in hospital under general anaesthetic
  • Usually day surgery
  • Compression garment worn for several weeks
  • Most patients return to light activity within days

Swelling settles gradually, with results continuing to refine over several months.

Risks and Considerations

There are potential risks with any surgical procedure. In gynaecomastia surgery the risks include:

  • Bleeding or haematoma
  • Infection
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Scarring
  • Contour irregularity
  • Asymmetry
  • Need for revision surgery

Discussing these risks and how they might apply to you forms part of your consultation with Dr Tomlinson.

Consultation

A consultation allows time to:

  • Confirm diagnosis
  • Discuss goals and expectations
  • Review surgical options
  • Explain risks and recovery
  • Provide individualised cost information

Dr Tomlinson aims to provide clear, balanced advice so that you can make an informed decision about whether surgery is right for you.
