Dr Jill Tomlinson

Dr Jill Tomlinson is a fully qualified Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon based in Melbourne.
After graduating dux of University High School, Dr Tomlinson completed her medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 2001. She was one of only five students to graduate with First Class Honours in both Medicine and Surgery.
She undertook her internship and basic surgical training at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, home of the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and Australia’s first hand transplant program. In 2003, she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy.
Following basic surgical training, Dr Tomlinson undertook two years of advanced general surgical training, including rotations in breast, thoracic, vascular, and bariatric surgery. She commenced specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2007 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2011.
Specialist Hand Surgery Training
After qualifying as a plastic surgeon, Dr Tomlinson pursued additional subspecialty training in hand and wrist surgery to offer comprehensive care in this field.

2012–2013 – Hand and Microsurgical Fellow, Orthopaedic Unit, John Hunter Hospital (NSW), one of Australia’s largest trauma centres
Her practice now focuses on hand surgery and selected specialist plastic surgical services, including infant ear molding.

Dr Tomlinson believes that thoughtful use of web technologies can significantly improve patient communication, education, and outcomes.

Academic and Professional Contributions
Dr Tomlinson has been a Specialty Editor for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery since 2012. She has published in leading international journals including: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; Annals of Plastic Surgery; British Medical Journal (BMJ); and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
She regularly attends specialty conferences and workshops to maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in hand and reconstructive surgery and serves as a reviewer for medical journals.
Leadership and Governance
Dr Tomlinson is a Graduate and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) and has held senior leadership roles within the medical profession.
From 2023–2025, she served as the elected President of the Australian Medical Association (Victoria). She has also served as a Federal Councillor of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) (2016–2021 and 2023–2025). She is the current Chair of AMA Victoria‘s Private Specialist Practice Policy Council and a Council member of AMA Victoria.
Her previous leadership roles include: Secretary, Australian Federation of Medical Women; Deputy Chair, Women in Surgery Section, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons; Treasurer, Victorian Medical Women’s Society; Member, Avant Doctors-in-Training Advisory Council.
She is a member: Australian Medical Association; Victorian Hand Surgery Society; Australian Hand Surgery Society; Women’s Health Victoria.
